Reconstruction Starts
The reconstruction is when the South reconstructs their divided states back into one. The reconstruction process started happened when the North had defeated the South. The reason why the South was destroyed was because of a person named of William Tecumseh Sherman. Sherman had wiped out anything towards the South. That’s why the reconstruction for about 12 years (1856-1877). Now they are reconstructing the South back and with not a lot of slaves.
Two people that were major in the events were Vice President Andrew Johnson and Charles Sumner. Vice President Andrew Johnson was part of the reconstruction because after Abe Lincoln had been assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, he had to take over as the president. He started the reconstruction process in the South. It made Southerners under military rule. He also had started the "black code", he thought that blacks could not manage to live om their own lives and he thought they don't get the right to vote.
Charles Sumner had been trying to change the slaves during the reconstruction process. He had tried to get slaves the liberty and equality like the whites. He believed that they should be able to own land, vote, and enter into contracts. Sumner was hit by a cane by Brooks which had been a symbol on South as a hero for defending his honor. He tried to press charges on Andrew Johnson. (He died of a fatal heart attack.)

Two Major Events During Reconstruction
Black Code and the Ku Klux Klan Act were two major events during the reconstruction. Ku Klux Klan is a military protection against the blacks and aiming on the republicans by destroying their property, assault, and murder so they can influence them on the next election. The Ku Klux Klan Act was passed by Congress which allowed Ulysses S. Grant to attack break up that clan. At the end there was a lot of people arrested (nine thousand) and when the reconstruction process was over then the KKK was faded away.
The "black code" had restricted the freed blacks activity and as well as keeping them as labor because since the slavery has been faded. Then the black will have to sign a contract and if they don't they have a chance to be arrested. North was angry so they try to destroy Johnson's policies, and by 1866 they focused on Republican Party's in Congress over Reconstruction.
